Data sources

The universe uses real, openly licensed data. Each source and its credit:

  • Planet, moon and star facts and orbits — NASA/JPL Solar System Dynamics (approximate orbital elements), NASA NSSDC planetary fact sheets, IAU/NAIF pole orientation and spin models. Public domain.
  • Stars and galaxies — SIMBAD, CDS, Strasbourg (positions and distances). Credited as requested by CDS.
  • Earth globe imagery — NASA Earth Observatory, Blue Marble Next Generation, served by NASA GIBS (Global Imagery Browse Services) and Worldview. NASA imagery is in the public domain; credit: NASA Earth Observatory. Land outlines for the globe: Natural Earth, public domain.
  • Real city views: buildings, streets and water — Buildings, roads and water: © OpenStreetMap contributors and Overture Maps Foundation, under the Open Database License (ODbL). Building heights where noted: PLATEAU, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, Japan (CC BY 4.0); NYC Building Footprints, NYC Department of City Planning / OTT (NYC Open Data); 3D BAG, 3DGI, TU Delft and Kadaster (CC BY 4.0). Building footprints, streets and water are shared under the Open Database Licence (ODbL); the processed files served at /twins/ are a derived database under the same licence. Sources: © OpenStreetMap contributors; Overture Maps Foundation (including Microsoft and Google Open Buildings footprints and Esri Community Maps).
  • Real city views: terrain — Terrain: AWS Terrain Tiles, built from SRTM, USGS NED, GMTED and other open elevation sources.
  • Real weather in the sky — Weather: MET Norway, CC BY 4.0. Licence CC BY 4.0.

City views cover about one square kilometre each and are a snapshot of the source data. Buildings without a known height are drawn low and marked. Terrain is smoothed and approximate.
